Let's Pick a Date!

Here's a poll to help pick a weekend to get together. (This is the first time I've used this, so I hope it works okay.) Feel free to elaborate in the comments section:

I am up for this. I am totally open on dates as I am only 1-37 hours away in San Diego.

1 to 37 hours...? ;)

torgone -- That's great to hear! The more the merrier!

Fred -- You've never driven the 5/405.

Well...no, that's true.

This actually sort of raises an important point, which is not anything that has to be figured out now, but will certainly be a consideration as we get closer to the date -- specifically how we (mostly the out-of-towners) will get around in a city as notoriously difficult to get around in as L.A. Rental cars, carpool with natives? Again, nothing that needs to be figured out now, or even that big of an issue, but it's definitely something to keep in mind as we plan events and make travel plans.

The travel time is something to consider, definitely, but I don't think it'll be as bad as you might be picturing it. If we cluster activities that are geographically close to each other, and try to avoid the obvious rush hour trouble spots, we should be fine.

Could it be in the spring instead?

Which spring? 2008 or 2009?

Because, so far, there hasn't been a lot of interest in a 2009 capfest, and the interest has primarily been for Fall 2008. Obviously that's not going to work out for everybody, or whichever specific dates we choose won't work, but I worry about changing it. Although I'd welcome any other thoughts from other cappers.

There are other cappers out there, right? :)

Yeah, when Fred first floated the idea on the eGroup, there wasn't a lot of enthusiasm for spring. But that doesn't mean something can't happen then, too. If that's the only time you can make it down and still want to make the trip, I'm sure some other folks might want to do so as well. I certainly have no qualms about being a host twice in '08.

Well, I was just asking because I might, MIGHT be embarking on a big western road trip next spring before grad school. But you don't need to change anything on my behalf.

My big concern about this venture is the locality of it. I mean, Eric is out in La Verne, which is a fair piece from LA proper, while Brett is in Simi Valley -- closer to LA, but about a day's drive from Eric (exaggerating -- sort of). I can always stay at my mom's place in Rancho Cucamonga, but man, that's a long haul to try to go to and from downtown LA each day/night.

Any thoughts on exactly *where* this is all going to take place?

Oh, and I forgot to say, I hope Torgone makes it, because I'd like to meet him! (Also LauraPowers and everybody else.)

(Gen! Sssh! You're scaring the out-of-towners!)

;-)

Actually, I think we can minimize the travel time worries if we choose and schedule our activities wisely. As we get closer to the event and have a better sense of who's coming and what they want to do, I think we can come up with some good plans.

My bigger concern is finding a balance of activities for folks like us (and starryeyed and maybe others) who will probably have younger kids in tow, with activities for the more footloose and fancy-free crowd.

(Is this just a sign we cappers are all getting old? Maybe by the next capfest we'll be reduced to trying to coordinate places to use our senior citizen discounts.)

GEDDOFF MY LAWN YA SMOOCHERS!

Do we have to bring a kid? Because a year or so from now just barely gives me time to get knocked up and push one out...

:) I'm not a sayin' I'm a makin' it.. and I'm not a sayin' I'm a not makin' it, but if there is an email list floating around please put me on it. Ya'll are just a hop, skip and a short plane ride from us Seattlites of Love and we do enjoy spreading that love around!

I think, by and large, this blog is supposed to serve as the e-mail list.

And we may want to consider some non-kid-friendly events...

Then I'll keep this bookmarked and make myself at home.

And I didn't mean any offense.. kids rock! :)

I have absolutely no problem with cappers bringing their kids. Nor would I expect Eric and Mary Ann to hide their kids away. I'm just saying that some events, like Cartoon Dump that's been suggested, or maybe just some drinks, might be better suited to an adult crowd. I think we can easily strike a happy balance.

First we've got to figure out exactly when, how many days, and then what.
